The first thing to decide is if this will be a standalone, or if it will be part of a series. In the 40-50k range, these are often part of a series. It makes the most financial sense to write in a series. The connection can be as loose as characters from each book being part of the same pack or vampire coven, or there can be an overarching theme that carries across all the books in the series. If you go that route, it’s essential that each couple gets their own HEA ending and personal resolution in their book while purposely not wrapping up all the loose ends until the final book in the series.

Ch. 1
FMC’s POV
This is usually the meet-cute chapter. To hook the reader immediately, toss them into the action with a chase scene or something that raises the adrenaline. You can make it clear as the chapter progresses what’s happening and why, but starting with action is likely to rapidly draw in your reader.

A common setup is the MMC is coming to the FMC’s rescue, or he is somehow caught up in the action. If she’s running from another pack, he’s the one who helps scatter those chasing her. You can flip this and have her help him instead. Just don’t make her a weak heroine.

Even in the midst of the action, she notices how strong and capable he is. If she’s a shifter or paranormal, her senses might be heightened beyond human-level. Be sure to engage all her senses when describing her first impression of him.
