Chapter 1
FMC’s POV
We’re introduced to the everyday world of the heroine as she goes through her normal routine. Reveal subtle hints about inner demons or past trauma she has overcome to get to this point in her life, whether through glimpses of lingering pain or illustrations of her quiet strength despite adversity, OR toss her directly into the situation that’s going to put her at risk (such as witnessing a murder).
She comes across as intelligent, capable, and independent, yet there’s a sense of something missing, a void she copes with by immersing herself in work and keeping tightly closed off from others emotionally. Toward the middle of the chapter, the first stirrings of danger or mystery begin to arise (if you didn’t open with the action), through foreshadowing hints or a sense of being watched/followed, putting the heroine on alert.
