What is your concept? How do your MMC and FMC meet? What obstacles do they face? Remember to keep that on the simple side, since this is a novella. There is always at least one obstacle keeping them apart, but it isn’t insurmountable. You might be able to squeeze in a subplot alongside your main story and obstacle, but it’s difficult with the word count…

Ch. 1

FMC’s POV

You can start with either character’s POV, or even write just one character’s POV throughout, but it’s typical to see through the FMC’s eyes first. (If you’re using this to write gay romance, then ignore that and pick a character to begin the narrative.) Do remember to tweak the chapter guides if you start with his POV instead.

This is the chapter where they meet, though the meet-cute can happen toward the end of the chapter. It clearly sets up the circumstances surrounding the FMC, and it foreshadows at what’s going to happen. This is the reader’s introduction to your FMC, so make her likeable and relatable. When she meets MMC, whether in the beginning or toward the end of the chapter, make sure you give the reader a clear picture of how she perceives him. She can notice his body and think about sex. This isn’t a PG novella, so feel free to get as smutty as you want. The main difference between this and the Virgin/Alpha style is the types of characters you’re writing about. Don’t skimp on her reactions and include all her senses.
