Black Vs. Gray
Dark romance has two distinct classes, though there are myriad shades of gray. There is the super-dark, where very awful things happen to the FMC, usually at the MMC’s hands. These can be really dark and edgy. At the end, she finds more darkness in her rather than him discovering some light. She enters his world completely, and he shows little change, except with her. We’ll call those black romances.
The second kind are gray romances. Screwed-up things still happen, but the tone isn’t quite as dark. He’s more likely to be a mafia don than a serial killer, for example. He’s also not quite as dark at heart. When they find a way to be together, it’s because both of them have made compromises, and he finds some light in his soul after all. It’s inspired by her, but it marginally changes him.
Ch. 1
FMC’s POV
This is the introduction chapter, where we get to see her life before MMC. It can be normal, or she can be mired in his world already (a bartender at his club, for example), but if she’s aware of him at all, she’s afraid of him. She’s intrigued too, but mostly still ruled by fear. She has steered clear of him because she knows his reputation, or she’s seen him in action. If she’s never seen him before, she probably has no idea how to handle a man like him, and if she’s leading a normal life, it probably won’t have ever crossed her mind how she’d handle a situation that brings her into his orbit.
Try to give a glimpse of her defect in this introductory chapter, either through her words or actions. She seems pretty perfect or sweet, but there’s a hint she isn’t as uncomplicated as she seems.
It’s good to have her being noticed by him by the end of this chapter. If not, no later than Ch. 2.
