The main trait that makes SF its own genre is the technology in the story is not in real life at the time it is written. For example, the communicator that looked like a flip phone in the original Star Trek. It wasn’t until some 23 years later that the technology was around. It can be a look at the near future or the far-off future, but only a few subniches take place in present-day or near present-day.

This is also the start of a small subplot that helps get MC to the obstacle (main point of conflict) of this book. If this is a series, the tech you have picked will have different facets shown in different books. Don’t forget to develop the characters along with the technology. SF readers want the tech, but they also want a relatable character, who isn’t one-dimensional, especially in soft SF.
