The main trait that makes Sci-Fi its own genre is the technology that is in the story is not in real life at the time it is written. For example, the communicator that looked like a flip phone in the original Star Trek. It wasn’t until some 23 years later that the technology was around. Sci-Fi is also just as much of a setting as a genre, so you can also have Sci-Fi mysteries, Sci-Fi Romances, etc.

FTL—Faster Than Light. The means to which you get around the speed limit of light and your character to different planets. It can be Hyperspace, warp, generation ships, Cryosleep, and many more.

Chapter 1:

Sets up the world. Introduction of the MC and an inkling of the issue they must solve. One of their companions can show up in this chapter. This is also the start of a small subplot that helps get MC to start the main issue of this book. Main issue should also have something to do with the technology you are highlighting in the book. If this is a series, then the tech you have picked will have different facets shown in different books. Don’t forget to develop the character along with the technology. Sci-Fi readers want the tech, but they also want a relatable character, who isn’t one-dimensional.

If you are doing a series, and this is the second+ book, this is the recap chapter. It covers pertinent information in broad strokes.
